Dubrovnik

Hello again everyone and welcome to a new country!

CROATIA!!!

Only 3 days of it mind you, but we still get our passports stamped ^ — ^.

Remember when we went to Crete and we went overnight on a massive ferry. We went on a ferry again, it was just smaller, much, much, much, smaller. Another different thing was when you check in you don't check in at the port. Oh no, you check In at a random street 10 minutes from the ferry station and just to top it off at the front of the line and with 5 people behind you think the person in the booth would hurry, yet it took 2 HOURS to get all our passports and stuff checked so as we boarded the boat at 10 we reflected that it was a good idea that we first tried to get in at 6.30.

As we arrived at our villa blurry eyed and droopy tailed we were thoroughly revived to see:

Wallace!!!

Who's a cute prehistoric reptile!

Wallace is, as you can see, a tortoise. Here is a video of him

The city of Dubrovnik is an ancient civilisation here are some pictures:

Ahhhhhhhhh!!!

This street is called placa Stradum which means big ugly street.

As our first day in Dubrovnik this was a great way to start. We ended the day with a relaxed walking tour.

The next day we got a bit more serious and decided to walk the old city Dubrovnik walls built in about 700AD. The walls are nine metres thick at the top, 16metres thick at the base and ten meters high. They have survived missile attacks, bombs, canons, earthquakes and tourists.

Now they put cafés on it.

But by far the highlight of our tour of the city, was the view from the ocean

That's right - by kayak!

Drew had some trouble with the kayak

The great blue can see you!

Our kayak trip started in a rocky cove near the shore and ended there too. After a quick demonstration, we set off to an island just off the coast called Lokrum. It is cursed by Monks who were kicked off it by Napoleon in 1800. Something bad will happen to anyone who stays the night here dum dum dum!

The boat paddling was exhausting and I was very tired (In a good way) as time went on. As we rounded Lokrum Island our guide showed us the clearest water, in the clearest bay, in the clearest sea in a country known for its clear water. While we paddled around the island, he explained to us about the peacocks that lived there for generations. He forgot to mention the NUDE sun bakers that also went there......Not pretty.

The highlight of the trip was definitely when we stopped for lunch in a bay only accessible by kayak and a no fishing zone. I wanted to go snorkelling until I saw the 1st person jump from a nearby cliff..........forget snorkelling, I want to do that!

The stakes were high, the cliff was sheer and the adrenalin built. The climb to the top was so treacherous there was no going back. The cliff was about 7 metres which doesn't sound a lot but is when you look down. It looked even further because you could see the rocks on the sea floor in the clear water below

After that nerve racking experience it was time to head for home.

Our couple of days in Dubrovnik have been great and I wish we had had more time to explore its old town wall and other secrets we didn't yet discover. Some day i'll return to gaze upon its ever standing-walls again, but for now its time to head to Venice.

Missing you all

Zoe
