As we ran to the train station I somehow knew something was up. I tried to contemplate what it would be but I was running too fast and I couldn't concentrate. I suppose we all felt it but, none of us had the energy to waste.
We had departed from Rome just over an hour ago and had a very swift and comfortable train ride. Ten minutes through the journey we were thinking about one thing...
The Naples Train station
The reason this was so scary was because the very large amount of lawlessness that happened about every two minutes according to every source we'd checked. Its a dangerous, scary place.
I thought that the criminals belonged to the mafia but now i know better. This is a version that I found on blogspot. Click here to read it all
"Imagine a school playground, all the kids are playing together and having fun. Then a group of bullies come and bully some of the kids. The kids then go tell the teachers but the teachers don't do anything and just ignore it. So the kids that got bullied want to do something about this so they form a group(the Mafia) to stop the bullies and prevent others from showing up.
These kids start the Mafia to stop the bullies because the teachers won't do anything about them. So one of the Mafia members gets beat up by a group of bullies. The Mafia believe that since they are protecting the other kids from the bullies that the kids owe them money so the Mafia can buy band-aids for injured Mafia members. Every time a bully shows up, the kids owe the Mafia money.
So for a while now there haven't been any bullies so the kids believe they don't need to pay the Mafia anymore. The Mafia doesn't like this so they bully the kids into giving them money.
So that is the base of the Mafia and how it started. Eventually the Mafia began to do other services such as smuggling. Then other people started their own Mafia groups
Here is a quote from one the classic movies "Goodfellas. "All they got from Paulie was protection from other guys looking to rip them off. And that's what it's all about. That's what the FBI could never understand. That what Paulie and the organization [i.e. the Mafia] does is offer protection for people who can't go to the cops. That's it. That's all it is. They're like the police department for wise-guys"
Half cool half scary huh
Right, lets do the math
Naples is run by the mafia + über cheap train ride + lots of people = oh dear.
The good news was there were trains on half an hour intervals and that we had one leaving 10 minutes after we arrived there. The bad news was we missed it. It's also why we were rushing and that we had our funny feeling, it was all leading up to this.
Pompeii
On arrival in Pompeii 60 minutes later than planned, we were thoroughly disappointed with the state of the place. There was litter everywhere! Plastic bottles, beer cans, dirty nappies, you name it and it was there. Cat pee smell? Yes. It was completely revolting, in all respects.
After walking ten minutes in the burning heat we were all ready to go bazzoncas at each other for the slightest misbehaviour. We did not talk the whole way, We were putting in to much effort into carrying the cases.
When we finally arrived at our hotel at seven o'clock, even dad was sweating like a pig. After some time out we hit the streets of Pompeii for what turned out to be a lovely meal before we all brushed our our teeth and went to bed.
Yummy |
I had strawberry and peach sorbet |
The next day we went to the archeological site (why else to Pompeii in the 1st place) bright and early.
Here are some photos.
All roads lead to Rome - really! Follow our pointing and you will be in Rome. |
This is the pompeii cafeteria. A kind of Ye olde macas |
The spaces between the statues are holes. the ancient people of Pompeii would use the spaces as lockers. Wouldn't it be cool if all school lockers looked like that! |
The volcano erupts! (Reenacted by half wits.) |
The volcano over the ancient forum and temple. The two peaks used to be joined by a big one in the middle which is the top that blew when Vesuvius "blew its top" |
I have a fear of suffocation victims; especially, really old, heat blasted muscle corpses (who isn't), but I've included some photos so you an see them any way.
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww |
Dude you need to floss more often |
Dude you need to floss more often |
Dude you need to floss more often |
And finally now I would like you to see "the final moments of Pompeii" reenacted by half Wits
Pompeii is like an egg, normal on the outside, but the real treasure lies inside waiting for you to find it. But all the fun isn't at the end. It's also in the process of cracking it open.
Missing y'all
